Sketchbook Journal Workshops: CHAPTER 4

with Lorraine Berkshire-Roe

Price: £30 per workshop

WHAT

A sketchbook journal is a place to explore creativity and record the world around you.  They have the personality of their creators and can be a therapeutic place where you can do whatever you chose and make your own rules.

In these 8 workshops, you will experiment with collage techniques, explore nature note-taking, try paper engineering, pen & ink drawing, printmaking, in-situ drawing, watercolour painting, and holiday journaling.

WHO

Lorraine Berkshire-Roe is an Oxford-based illustrator and ceramic artist who works mainly in pen and ink, creating playful, characterful pieces that bring a bit of joy to the everyday. After years of developing her style through sketchbooks and creative challenges like Inktober, she returned to self-employment in 2024 and now produces prints, cards, and hand-crafted ceramics, all with her signature touch of humour and warmth.

She’s spent the past decade juggling creative projects with teaching, most recently running after-school art clubs and workshops for kids. These days you’ll find her at markets around Oxford, sharing her latest work, taking commissions, and building a practice rooted in community and curiosity.

Creating an image using Collage

This is the first workshop of eight in Chapter 4 of Lorraine Berkshire-Roe’s Sketchbook Journal Workshops.

All workshops can be booked separately and are not part of a course.

There are many ways to use 2 Dimensional materials to make a collage. Drawing in-situ

This is the third of eight separate workshops.

All workshops can be booked separately and are not part of a course.

You will be exploring the art of drawing in-situ by making sketches of the event space, the Cluster. In-situ drawing is a really wonderful way of achieving some mindfulness: when you are drawing in an environment, it takes all your concentration. Focussing on capturing a view really does make the rest of the world disappear for a short while.

You will start off making some quick sketching, ending with a longer sketch. You will use different media to discover which are the best ones, depending on the time you have for the sketches.

The will be resources and time to add notes, information and a small photo to the page afterwards to make a complete record of your 2 hours spent at the Cluster co-working space.

WORKSHOP 4

BOOK NOW

Saturday 13th June 2026 / 10am to 12pm

Nature note-taking

This is the fourth of eight separate workshops.

All workshops can be booked separately and are not part of a course.

Nature is all around us, sometimes you just have to look.

In this workshop we will be drawing from collected samples of Spring flowers and leaves etc. Watercolour and pencil are great media to use for this, I can give a short demonstration of using watercolour if anyone would like that. You can add notes about the date, location, details of any plants and where they were found etc. There will be opportunity to take photos of any plants you find in-situ in The Cluster courtyard.

WORKSHOP 5

BOOK NOW

Saturday 27th June 2026 / 10am to 12pm

Documenting an event using a pop-up

This is the fifth of eight separate workshops.

All workshops can be booked separately and are not part of a course.

This workshop will introduce you to ways to record things and use collected ephemera such as a visit to a museum, a journey, a day out or a visit to see friends or family for example, in a visually interesting way.

In this workshop you will make a record of this workshop at the Cluster co-working space using a simple pop up idea to transform the double page spread into a 3D masterpiece!

You can add information about the day: about the building, its use and its inhabitants and the wildlife and plants that are part of the environment. It is a chance to record these things using a selection of media including: drawing using reference pictures provided. using a variety of pens, collage using ephemera (tickets, business cards, postcards, maps, stickers etc) an instant camera to generate a photo to stick in if needed.

Dip pen and ink drawing

This is the sixth of eight separate workshops.

All workshops can be booked separately and are not part of a course.

I use a dip pen and ink in a lot of my illustration work.

You will learn the basics of using a dip pen and ink, experimenting with line thickness, using different techniques for shading and using ink washes with line work to add tone and form.

I will provide all reference and resources and material you can use as inspiration or to copy.

Holiday Journaling One

This is the seventh of eight separate workshops.

All workshops can be booked separately and are not part of a course.

In this workshop you will explore different ways to document a day out or a holiday. You are welcome to bring your own photos, ephemera, maps etc to use if you have a particular place or time you would like to document, but I will have all the reference, resources and inspiration you need if you don’t.

I love documenting holidays and short stays, it’s at those times that I have more opportunity to stop and look.

My holiday journaling is a mixture of recording what I can when I am there: some pages are finished on the day, some just have a title, a bit of writing or a quick sketch, which I may add more elements to at the end of a day, but sometimes this happens after I have get back home.

This could be sticking collected paper materials like cafe cards, tickets, maps etc. onto pages. I also draw from photos, stick photos in and all sorts of collected things.

This is the first of two holiday journaling workshops, there will be plenty of options to try over 2 sessions if that is what you wish.

WORKSHOP 8

BOOK NOW

Saturday 01st August 2026 / 10am to 12pm

OTHER USEFUL STUFF

The following materials will be provided for use during the sessions:

drawing pencils, coloured pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, scissors, glue sticks, tape, water colour paint sets, paintbrushes, a variety of pens such as brush markers, fine liners, paint markers, highlighters and any materials needed for the session experimenting with an art technique.

You are welcome to bring your own sketchbook to the workshops, but something with thicker paper than standard printer paper is recommended because you will be drawing on both sides.

ACCESSIBILITY INFORMATION

Please note that workshops will take place inside The Cluster building, which is a characterful older property. The outdoor area has uneven block paving, which may be difficult for those with limited mobility.

Unfortunately, the building is not wheelchair accessible.
